AS A SENIOR,
BEING SICK AND HUNGRY IS A CRISIS

UberEats is an online food ordering and delivery platform launched by Uber in 2014. Meals are delivered by couriers using cars, scooters, bikes, or on foot.

UberEats Meal Plan is a brand extension, product system designed to promote autonomy, meal plan services for elderly, user groups with health conditions and limited accessibilities to cooked meals in NYC. It intends to provide communal care, food securities, independent living style to the users while ensuring the caregiver’s sense of safety and participation in their loved ones life through unobtrusive monitoring on the platform.

PROBLEM

NYC senior hunger crisis has long existed, however in 2022, the pandemic has worsened the hidden hunger by straining home meal delivery. Non-profit organizations and authorities including ‘The Department for the Aging’ and ‘Meals on wheels’ has been facing challenges meeting the increased demand, leading to hunger, inconsistent dietary quality, and emotional distress for the senior population and their families.

KICKOFF

As America grays, more senior population face inconsistent access to enough food for a healthy life. I looked at the population growth comparison between senior and young adult age groups by NYC boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island) from 2005 to 2015, according to NYC Comptroller Brad Lander.

Suffering from physical & mental illnesses, ageism, and financial difficulties, it evently leads to their food insecurities. Therefore, the question arises: How can we enhance accessibility to resources through food delivery for senior users and their family members in New York City?

INTERVIEWS

Identifying the key stakeholders, I researched from online articles, reports and interviewed in-person in the scopes of a complete user journey story coming from both the senior groups and their caregiver groups. Through these interviews framework, I aimed to gain insight into the food delivery services commonly used, as well as the struggles and concerns the seniors have throughout the process.

MARKET RESEARCH

The available senior meal plan delivery services and products in NYC are ambiguous and troublesome. Most services are not accomodating to senior groups’ needs that includes communal care and nutritional needs with restricting health diets.

MAPPING

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

Creating the user flow for the platform required a full understanding of the meal plan delivery process and the complexity between users from two generations. This was made possible by identifying and addressing the key pain points through interviews and research. The following site map is an example that depicts a smooth user flow, illustrating how a user navigates through the pages and information to reach their ultimate destination of ordering a meal plan delivery.

LOW FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

I synthesized qualitative data into actionable insights through journey mapping and competitive analysis. Then, I come to mapping out how a user might navigate through the app pages and the information contains in the page, tackling on giving easy meal plan enrollment/order flow, seamless ingredients filter, monitor from family members and accurate analysis and record of food history.
